DESCRIPTIONTHE POSITIONThe Department of Parks, Recreation and
Marine is seeking an energetic and dedicated recreation
professional to fill a Recreation Superintendent position, which
supports the Community Recreation Services Bureau.SALARY &
BENEFITSThe Recreation Superintendent has an annual salary range of
$95,000 to $115,000. Initial placement is dependent upon
qualifications. Salary is commensurate with work experience and
supplemented by the City's attractive benefits package which
includes:Retirement --- City offers CalPERS with a benefit of 2.5%
55 for Classic members or 2% at 62 for new employee members as
defined by PEPRA, subject to the limitations set by PERS. Employee
pays the employee portion. The City also participates in Social
Security.Vacation --- 12 days (96 hours) after one year of service;
15 days (120 hours) after four years, six months of service; 20
days (160 hours) after 19 years, six months of service.Executive
Leave --- Forty (40) hours per year.Sick Leave --- One day (8
hours) earned per month; unlimited accumulation; conversion upon
retirement to cash credit toward health and/or dental insurance
premiums, or to pension credits.Holidays --- Nine designated
holidays per year, plus four floating personal holidays (8 hours
per holiday).Transportation and Technology AllowancesHealth
Insurance - Two plans are available: one HMO, and one PPO plan. The
City pays the major portion of the premium for employee and
dependents.Dental Insurance --- Two dental plans are available for
employees and dependents.Life Insurance --- City-paid term life
insurance policy equal to three times annual salary to a maximum of
$500,000.Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) --- Available for health
and dependent care expenses.Disability --- City-paid short-term and
long-term disability insurance.Management Physical --- Annual
City-paid physical examination.Deferred Compensation --- Available

and Marine is a nationally recognized and award-winning
organization with 1,100 full-time/part-time staff and a budget of
$58 million. The Department oversees facilities and programs that
reflect the needs and interests of a culturally diverse community,
including: Approximately 170 parks with more than 3,200 acres
devoted to open space and recreation, 27 community centers, 3
public pools, 6 miles of beaches, and 3 marinas.The Department's
Community Recreation Services Bureau provides free and fee-based
recreational programs and leisure opportunities, both self-directed
and organized, for people of all ages and cultures. Youth programs
include free youth sports for ages 5 to 14 serving nearly 10,000
participants annually, summer and vacation day camps, 2,100
recreational and educational classes, sailing and aquatics
instruction, teen center activities, skateboarding opportunities,
and supervised afterschool and weekend activities at parks and
schools.THE CITYLong Beach is a full service City with a population
of 462,257. The City employs approximately 6,000 full and part-time
personnel. The City operates its municipally owned airport, harbor,
marinas, oil, gas and water departments, as well as its own public
safety, cultural, health, recreation and entertainment agencies. It
has some of the best shoreline, marinas, and beaches in Southern
California, enjoying 352 clear days per year, an average
temperature of 63 degrees, and pleasant offshore breezes. The City
also has good public schools and is the location of the largest
California community college and State University that provide
numerous undergraduate and post-graduate programs.EXAMPLES OF
DUTIESResponsible for one or more of the following: Community Park
Programs, Senior Services, Day Camps, Special Events, Adaptive
Recreation, Sports, Aquatics, and School-Based Recreation;Supervise
up to 10 full-time staff and 50-150 part-time staff;Prepare and
monitor annual program budgets;Develop, implement, and supervise
recreation programs;Develop and monitor performance
measures;Select, train, evaluate, and discipline staff;Act as
liaison to advisory boards and community groups;Prepare and present
written and oral reports for various audiences;Responsible for
developing and maintaining positive public relations and excellent
customer service;Drive to off-site meetings, trainings and
events;Perform other related duties as assigned.REQUIREMENTS TO
FILEThis position is open to all candidates who meet the following
minimum qualifications:Four (4) years of progressively responsible
administrative and supervisory-related experience;Graduation from
an accredited college or university with a Bachelor---s Degree in
Recreation, Leisure Studies, Public Administration, or a closely
related field. Relevant experience may be substituted for education
on a year-for-year basis;Must possess a working knowledge of
recreational programming, personnel management, budget/financial
management, program planning, and community relations;Must possess
a valid motor vehicle operator---s license at the time of
selection;Ability and willingness to work evenings, weekends, and
holidays.The successful candidate will possess the
following:Outstanding customer service and strong organizational
skills;Excellent oral, written and public presentation
skills;Ability to be sensitive to the Bureau's customers, community
groups and community leaders;Ability to work independently and
