The City of Long Beach, Department of Health and Human Services, is recruiting for a full-time, unclassified Health Educator II position in the City Health Officer Bureau. Reporting to a Community Program Specialist IV, this position will provide critical STD disease investigations and provide partner services for individuals newly infected with Syphilis, among other sexually transmitted diseases. This position is located at the Main Health Department, 2525 Grand Avenue, Long Beach, CA 90815.


* Conducts field investigations to locate and contact those with HIV/STD infections or potential infections. * Conducts follow-ups and referrals to ensure examination and treatment for those with HIV/STD infections, as well as those who have been exposed or are at risk for exposure to HIV/STDs. * Provides HIV/STD testing and counseling to promote health risk reduction education. * Provides HIV/STD care linkages to social, medical, mental health, and other service providers. * Maintains detailed records on disease intervention interactions. * Informs and educates medical providers about communicable disease reporting and treatment guidelines. * Collects, interprets, and enters sexually transmitted disease labs and other case surveillance data into electronic data management systems. * Reviews case files for quality assurance. * Develops and disseminates health education content for healthcare providers and the public. * Collects, reviews, and enters HIV/STD-related information into various electronic data systems. * Serves as a liaison to other local health jurisdictions regarding STDs and other communicable diseases. * Conducts communicable disease investigations during outbreak or disaster response operations, such as shelter activations. * Performs other related duties as required.


* High School Diploma, GED or equivalent certification. * Two years of professional experience providing health education services to the public and/or interacting with community groups concerning health education. (Academic degrees in Health Education, Health Sciences, Public Health, or a closely related field may be substituted for required experience on a year-for-year basis. Copy of degree or transcripts denoting degree conferral required as a PDF attachment at the time of filing if qualifying with an academic degree). * Willingness and ability to work some evenings as needed. * Valid motor vehicle operator license. (Required to obtain a California motor vehicle operator license within 6 months of employment if license is out of state. DMV K4 License Information Report required during onboarding for California residents). * Required documents, such as transcripts or degree, must be uploaded to the online application in PDF format at the time of filing. Candidates who possess degrees from colleges or universities from outside the United States must attach proof of educational equivalence at the time of filing.


* Bachelor's Degree in Health Education, Health Sciences, Public Health or a closely related field. * Experience working with the public and interacting with community groups. * Bilingual skills (Khmer and/or Spanish).


* Ability to work independently and as part of a team, be flexible, and manage multiple assignments in a dynamic and fast-paced environment. * An understanding of community health and public health related topics. * Excellent organizational and administrative skills. * Ability to work effectively with a wide variety of people and populations by consistently exercising tact, good judgment, and a proactive, problem-solving focused approach. * Effective interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. * Proficiency in the use of computers, including e-mail and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
