Chief Engineer (Engineer III) Marine Transportation Long Beach, California Location: Long Beach, CA Department: Crew Reports to: Port Engineer and Captain Schedule: Negotiable Pay Band: Negotiable JOB SUMMARY: At Curtin Maritime an Engineer works to support Curtin Maritime Marine Transportation and Marine Construction projects. An Engineer must be/have: Able to safely and adequately engineer all Curtin Maritime vessels Advanced understanding and abilities in the unsupervised maintenance, repair, and design of all vessel systems. Advanced mechanical abilities including power pack replacements, small engine overhaul, etc. Skilled in all deckhand 1-3 duties Excellent skills in the training of other engineers, assistant engineers, and all other crew. Able to be proactive in work planning and doing things without being specifically told, as well as creating work plans for others. Proficient in the operation of winches. Proactively clean engine room, including: wiping down, degreasing, painting, organizing, inventorying, etc. TASKS AND DUTIES: Carry out preventative and scheduled maintenance and repairs for all equipment on the vessel. Create work plan and execute daily tasks in accordance with the established schedule in Vessel Management System. Update completed tasks with notes in Vessel Management System as completed. Maintain inventory of tools and critical/spare parts on board the vessel. Assign work to any assistant engineering staff and monitor to ensure satisfactory completion. Work as a deckhand as needed SKILLS, APTITUDES, QUALIFICATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS: Ability to handle stressful situations with focus. Understanding importance and taking pride and responsibility in mastering the small things, before mastering the big ones. Understand and respect the chain of command. Ability to take direction no matter how it is given. Continuously demonstrate a strong sense of responsibility and ownership by being pro-active in all situations /tasks. Physical Aptitudes Required: Must meet "fit for duty" requirements upon job offer (pre-employment physical and drug test) The employee must meet physical requirements including but not limited to, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, climbing up/down ladders and stairs, negotiating uneven and moving surfaces Able to work in confined spaces and carry heavy tools for extended periods of time Must be able to pull heavy lines/hoses, lift, carry heavy items, climb onto barges and up and down ladders. Must be comfortable entering tanks and other confined spaces Must be able to work in difficult conditions with exposure to all weather conditions (rain, ice, snow, wind, heat, etc.) Must be comfortable working aboard boats and barges using heavy lines, winches, and mechanical tools for repairs Ability to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Ability to work when exposed to odors, dust, dirt, mechanical hazards, high noise levels, and potentially hazardous equipment. Tests, Certifications and Other Requirements: USCG Medical Card DDE License Preferred, not required Physical & DOT Drug Test Respiratory Fit Test TWIC Card Passport, or ability to obtain a passport Participation in random drug testing program
