Search all of our job openings on our career portal. Position Summary Virgin Orbit (VO) is seeking a new member for our team to serve as Sr. Payload Operations Engineer. If you join us in this position, you will work on the launch operations team supporting launch site activity for the integrated payload. You will work in a small team and provide technical leadership throughout all aspects of the project. You will collaborate with the other Operations and Mission Management teams to assist in developing the payload handling and checkout process in the field. You will also be working with the customer during their launch campaign at our facility. This role is for a person that loves and has lots of hands on experience with great attention to detail and excellent people skills. This is a full-time position at our rocket factory in beautiful Long Beach, California, with periodic field assignments during launch campaigns at our launch sites in Mojave, California and other locations now in development around the globe. + Plan and conduct rocket and payload integrated operations in the field + Author work instructions and procedures for hardware installations, replacements or fixes + Work closely with technicians to safely and accurately perform hardware work + Generate checkout and activation procedures for each payload to be used during the launch countdown + Perform system-level checkouts and inspections to confirm functional and performance objectives are met + Work with engineers from Structures and Avionics to define the flow for hardware processing as well as electrical, RF, ordnance testing + Act as POC for operations to business development and mission management teams to define and receive payload operating requirements + Respond to what-if exercises from engineering and business development for payload accommodation in a wide range of topics that could include avionics, facility planning, cleanroom planning, launch site planning, and hazardous operations. + Design and/or purchase any mechanical or electrical ground support equipment needed to process and test the flight hardware for high rate of production + Support the customer needs when they are onsite and ensure that they receive the best care possible. + Help Virgin Orbit do our part to make the world a better place If you want to join us, youd better have all of these + Bachelors Degree in Computer Science or in STEM Majors (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) or equivalent experience + 5+ years of professional experience in an assembly, integration, manufacturing or test environment working on satellite or rocket systems + Knowledge of spacecraft systems + Experience with cleanroom operations, requirements, and best practices + Experience with working in ESD environments + Comfortable working hands on with flight hardware + Ability and willingness to perform effectively in a fast-paced, high-stress environment + Driven, highly motivated, and committed to improvement + Ability to add something unique and positive to our team + Generally high level of all-around awesomeness + Must be able to work all shifts and available for overtime as well as weekends when needed + Willing to travel (~25% of time) and be exposed to work in outdoor launch pad environment and you should probably have a bunch of these, too. + Experience with smallsats, cubesats, or dispensers + Experience writing and maintaining test procedures or hardware work instructions + Experience with vehicle-level integration, test, and launch operations of flight hardware + Experience with Solumina, NX, Teamcenter, JIRA + Experience with environmental control systems + Experience with oscilloscopes, safe-to-mates, current checks, mating harness connectors, and running test scripts + Experience with RE/RS, VNA, Signal Analyzer and Signal generator + Experience operating on console for an engineering test campaign and performing real-time evaluation + Excellent interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills + Excellent problem-solving and organizational skills + Passion for space exploration and a firm belief in the utility of affordable access to space ITAR Requirements To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by ITAR (22 CFR 120.15) or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
